Key takeaways
- HBR’s audit of 2,241 companies found an average lead response time of 42 hours. Few human teams can respond in minutes at every hour.
- Gartner forecast that conversational AI would cut contact-centre agent labour costs by $80 billion in 2026 and automate 1 in 10 agent interactions.
- Klarna’s CEO said in 2025 that customers must always be able to reach a human, after AI-only service hurt quality.
- The best model is hybrid: AI makes every first call and follow-up, humans run discovery, negotiation and closing.
"Should I hire three more salespeople, or use an AI calling agent?" I hear this question from business owners in Dubai all the time. It is the right question, but the answer is rarely one or the other. After years of building and managing sales teams and now building AI agents, here is how I would set up a calling engine in Dubai today.
What a sales development rep actually does all day
Strip away the job title, and a typical SDR’s day is made of:
- Calling new inbound leads and qualifying them.
- Following up leads that did not answer.
- Booking meetings for senior salespeople.
- Updating the CRM.
- Occasionally, real conversations that need judgement.
Items 1 to 4 are repetitive, time-sensitive and rules-based. Item 5 is the job. In most teams I have seen, item 5 is the smallest share of the day.
The speed problem humans cannot solve
When Harvard Business Review audited 2,241 US companies, the average time to respond to a web lead was 42 hours, and 23% never responded at all.[1] Firms that responded within an hour were nearly seven times as likely to qualify the lead.
You can hire excellent people and still lose on speed, because leads arrive when your team is on another call, at lunch, at a viewing or asleep. You would need a person sitting next to the phone at every minute of every day. That is not a people problem. It is a physics problem.
Where AI calling is genuinely better
- Instant first contact. An AI agent calls a new lead within seconds, every time.
- Perfect follow-up discipline. It never forgets attempt three, and it respects the UAE’s calling window and frequency caps automatically.
- Language coverage. One agent can speak Gulf Arabic, English, Hindi or Russian depending on the lead.
- Clean data. Every answer is written to the CRM in the same format.
- Scale on demand. A campaign launch or a portal promotion does not require temporary hires.
Analysts expect this to grow fast. Back in 2022, Gartner forecast that conversational AI would reduce contact-centre agent labour costs by $80 billion in 2026, with 1 in 10 agent interactions automated.[2]
Where humans still win
- Complex discovery. Understanding a family’s real reasons for moving, or a company’s politics around a purchase.
- Negotiation. Reading what is not said, and knowing when to hold.
- Trust at high value. A AED 4 million property or a multi-year corporate contract needs a person the customer can call by name.
- Recovering a bad experience. An upset customer wants to be heard by someone with authority.
Klarna learned this publicly. After a heavy push into AI customer service, CEO Sebastian Siemiatkowski told Bloomberg in May 2025 that the company was hiring human agents again, saying customers must always be able to reach a human and that investing in human support quality was the way forward.[3] The lesson is not that AI failed. It is that AI-only fails.
The hybrid model I recommend
| Stage | Who handles it | Why |
|---|---|---|
| First contact within 60 seconds | AI agent | Speed decides contact rates |
| Basic qualification (budget, timeline, need) | AI agent | Rules-based, should be consistent |
| Follow-ups and reminders | AI agent | Discipline and compliance |
| Discovery and demo | Human | Judgement and relationship |
| Negotiation and close | Human | Trust and authority |
| Post-sale check-ins | AI agent, human for issues | Coverage with escalation |
How to decide for your business
Ask three questions:
- How fast do we respond today, really? Measure the median, not the best case.
- How many leads die without three proper attempts? Check the CRM.
- What share of a salesperson’s day is real selling? If it is under half, automation will pay for itself.
If the answers are "hours", "many" and "less than half", start with AI for first contact and follow-up, and keep hiring humans for closing. You will need fewer of them, and the ones you have will be happier.
See how AI first contact and human closing work together.
My honest view
I have been an SDR, I have managed them, and I have built software to replace parts of the job. The parts worth replacing are the ones nobody enjoys: dialling, redialling, chasing voicemail and typing notes. The part worth keeping is the conversation. Build your engine so your people only do that.
