Ten years in sales taught me one thing: the missed call is the lost deal

A decade of selling and supporting customers across the UAE taught Abdelfattah Alsaeed why speed and availability beat clever scripts, and why every call deserves an answer.

45%of UAE customers would switch after one slow or poor experience

Key takeaways

  • Customers rarely leave because of price. They leave because nobody answered, or answered too late.
  • A ServiceNow and ThoughtLab study found 45% of UAE customers would switch to a competitor after a single poor or slow experience.
  • Zendesk’s CX Trends 2025 research found 63% of consumers would switch after one bad experience, up 9% in a year.
  • Northline AI exists so that no business in the UAE loses a customer to an unanswered call or message.

I started selling long before I had a job title for it. I ran my own e-commerce business, starting with shoes for customers in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, then perfumes for buyers across the Gulf, Europe, the USA, Asia and Africa. Later I sold professionally, in customer support and business development, here in the UAE. Over more than ten years, the products changed many times. One lesson never did.

The customer who cannot reach you does not wait. They buy from someone else.

The deals I lost were not lost on price

When you run a small online business, it is tempting to believe you lose sales because a competitor is cheaper. Looking back honestly, price was rarely the real reason. Time was. A reply sent the next morning. A call missed while packing orders. A WhatsApp message answered hours after the customer had moved on.

In professional sales, it was the same story with bigger numbers. The prospect who called while I was in a meeting and got voicemail. The lead that came in on a Friday afternoon and was cold by Monday. The customer who wanted one quick answer before paying and gave up when nobody picked up.

The research says the same thing

What I felt in my own pipeline turns out to be well documented.

  • A ServiceNow and ThoughtLab study, with fieldwork in late 2025, found that UAE residents collectively spend more than 83 million hours a year on hold, and that 45% of UAE customers would switch to a competitor after one poor or slow experience.[1]
  • Zendesk’s CX Trends 2025 research, covering about 5,100 consumers in 22 countries, found 63% of consumers would switch after just one bad experience, up 9% year on year.[2]
  • Harvard Business Review’s audit of 2,241 companies found the average response to a web lead took 42 hours, and companies that responded within an hour were nearly seven times as likely to qualify the lead.[3]

When I read those numbers, I recognised every lost deal in my own history.

Why it is worse than it looks

A missed call does not appear in any report. Nobody writes "lost to voicemail" in the CRM. The customer simply calls the next company on Google. You never see the loss, so you never fix it.

That is why so many good businesses in the UAE quietly lose customers: the clinic whose receptionist is with a patient, the brokerage whose agents are all at viewings, the restaurant that is too busy at 8 PM to answer a reservation call. They are good at their work. They are just unreachable at the exact moment a customer is ready.

Why I work on Northline AI

When I started working with AI voice agents, I saw for the first time a realistic way to close that gap. Not a phone tree that says "press 1", and not a chatbot that guesses. An agent that answers in natural Gulf Arabic or English, understands what the caller needs, books the appointment or answers the question from the business’s own information, and hands over to a person, with a summary, when a person is needed.

That is why I work on Northline AI, with one simple goal: no business should lose a customer to silence. Every call answered, every message replied to, every lead contacted while they are still interested, day or night.

What I would tell any business owner

  1. Measure what you cannot see. Check your phone system for missed and abandoned calls for one week. Most owners are shocked.
  2. Fix the first minute before the last mile. A better sales script will not help a customer who never got through.
  3. Do not choose between people and technology. Let AI handle availability and speed. Let your people handle relationships.
  4. Test it on your own number. That is why we offer a 14-night after-hours trial: you forward your calls after closing time and judge the results yourself.

The lesson, one more time

I have sold shoes, perfume, chocolate, services and software. The best product in the world does not sell if the customer cannot reach you. Answer first. Everything else comes after.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on your average customer value and how many calls go unanswered. Research from ServiceNow and ThoughtLab found 45% of UAE customers would switch after a single poor or slow experience, so each missed call carries a real chance of a lost customer.
