What Gong’s cold-call data taught me about the first 30 seconds

“The reason for my call is…” lifts success 2.1×. “Did I catch you at a bad time?” cuts meetings by 40%. A practitioner’s take on Gong’s cold-call research.

2.1×higher success when reps state the reason for the call

Key takeaways

  • Gong found that stating "the reason for my call" lifted cold-call success 2.1×, while "Did I catch you at a bad time?" made meetings 40% less likely.
  • Successful cold calls ran about twice as long as unsuccessful ones, and reps spoke about 55% of the time.
  • The first 30 seconds should answer three questions for the listener: who is this, why me, and why now.
  • In the UAE, open in the language the customer used, keep it short, and earn the right to ask questions.

The first 30 seconds of a cold call decide whether you get another five minutes. I have tested more openers than I can remember, in Arabic, English and a mix of both. Some worked, some made people hang up mid-sentence. So when Gong, the conversation-intelligence company, published what it learned from analysing thousands of recorded cold calls, I read it closely.[1] Here is what their data says, and how I apply it to calls in the UAE.

What Gong’s cold-call data found

2.1×
higher success rate when reps clearly state the reason for their callGong

Gong’s team looked at cold calls recorded on its platform and compared the ones that booked a meeting with the ones that did not.[1]

  • "The reason for my call is…" Reps who stated their purpose clearly had a 2.1× higher success rate.
  • "How have you been?" As an opener, it performed 6.6× better than calls without it. It feels slightly cheeky with a stranger, which is probably why it breaks the pattern.
  • "Did I catch you at a bad time?" Reps who used it were 40% less likely to book a meeting. You are inviting the person to say yes.
  • Successful calls were about twice as long as unsuccessful ones. Gong suggests a target of around 5 minutes 50 seconds.
  • Talk ratio: on successful cold calls, reps spoke about 55% of the time. On a cold call you have to carry more of the conversation than on a discovery call.
  • Monologues were longer on successful calls (around 53 seconds versus 25), because the rep was explaining something worth hearing rather than rushing.

These are patterns from recorded calls, mostly in B2B software. They show correlation, not proof. But they match what I have seen on the phone.

Why these openers work

Every person who answers an unknown number has three questions in their head:

  1. Who is this?
  2. Why are you calling me?
  3. Is this worth my time right now?

"Did I catch you at a bad time?" answers none of them and hands the other person an easy exit. "The reason for my call is…" answers the second question immediately. The faster you answer all three, the longer you are allowed to stay on the line.

My UAE version of the first 30 seconds

1. Greet in the customer’s language. If the lead came in through an Arabic form or an Arabic WhatsApp message, open in Arabic. In the Gulf, a warm "السلام عليكم" followed by the person’s name earns more patience than a rushed English pitch. If they switch to English, switch with them.

2. Say who you are and where they know you from. "This is Abdelfattah from Northline AI. You asked about AI call answering on our website on Tuesday." Context turns a cold call into a warm one.

3. Give the reason in one sentence. "The reason for my call is that you mentioned missing calls after 6 PM, and I want to see if a 14-day trial would help."

4. Ask permission for a specific, short next step. "Can I ask you two quick questions to see if it fits?" Specific and short gets a yes far more often than "Do you have a minute?"

After the opener: earn the five minutes

  • Ask about their situation before you pitch. One good question ("How do you handle calls after closing time today?") is worth five slides.
  • Talk enough to be useful. On cold calls, a 55% talk share is normal. Explain something they did not know.
  • Handle the first objection calmly. "Send me an email" is often a polite exit. Agree, then ask one question that makes the email relevant.
  • Close for a next step, not the deal. A demo, a trial or a call with the decision-maker.

Where AI helps, and where it does not

An AI calling agent can follow these principles perfectly every time: name the context, state the reason, ask permission, keep to the UAE calling window. It is excellent for the first contact with inbound leads and for structured follow-ups. Our outbound voice agent is built around exactly that.

Pure cold outreach to people who never contacted you is different. It is regulated in the UAE, it needs real judgement, and it is where experienced salespeople still earn their commission. Use automation to make sure every warm lead gets a perfect first 30 seconds, and keep your best people for the conversations that need them.

Give every lead a perfect first 30 seconds, in Arabic or English.
